Study: Wine can help you lose weight
Does a half a bottle of red wine a day keeps the weight away?
A recent Harvard University study followed 20,000 women over the course of 13 years, and found that wine drinkers were more likely to lose weight than non-drinkers. In fact, those who drank two glasses of red wine a day had a 70% reduced risk of obesity compared to those who did not in the study.
Red wine was shown to curb appetite, cut sugar cravings and lower blood pressure. A nightly glass of wine also relaxes the drinker, meaning an earlier bedtime and less eating.
Another study by an Oregon State University researcher shows that red wine containsellagic acid, a fat-burning antioxidant that blocks the development of existing fat cells, stops the formation of new ones and increases the liver cells’ ability to break down excess fat.
If calorie counters are still skeptical, the National Institute for Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism found that “when alcohol is substituted for carbohydrates, calorie for calorie, subjects tend to lose weight, indicating that they derive less energy from alcohol than from food.”
If you try this at home, remember moderation is key. Drinking too much wine at any time can have the opposite effect. But just because you want to lose a few pounds doesn’t mean you can’t indulge — the next time you are craving carbs or a high-sugar snack, reach for a glass of red wine instead.
